2023 Ford Ranger Pickup First Look
When the long-serving Ford Ranger for the North American market went out of production in2011, it was easy to look longingly toward Australia, where the Aussies launched a new, modern Ranger that would be marketed in several countries across the world.
Ford finally presented us with a "new" midsize Ranger pickup vehicle for 2019.
The problem was that what America got was essentially an eight-year-old Australian farm vehicle that had been adapted for the American market.
The new global 2023 Ford Ranger—the fifth generation of the midsize pickup—is designed with the North American market in mind from the start, with fresh styling, a more refined ride, and an enhanced interior
What's New With The Ranger?
The new 2023 Ranger, designed and engineered in Australia, is a significant change from the previous-generation truck.
The previous Ranger's sinuous, almost carlike lines are no longer present.
Instead, the midsize pickup adopts a blockier design that, from certain perspectives, resembles a plus-size Ford Maverick and, from others, a baby Ford F-150.
In other words, it's back to looking like a truck.
The new Ranger is supposed to be better balanced than before, riding on a redesigned but carryover platform that's about 2 inches bigger and longer than before, catering to both the work truck and lifestyle populations.
The increased length and track width will assist both, according to Ford, because it provides for a greater approach angle, off-road articulation, and cooling.
Meanwhile, the rear dampers have been moved outboard of the frame rails, which is supposed to improve ride quality both loaded and unloaded, which was a key flaw on the previous Ranger.
Familiar Under The Hood
Unlike the Maverick and the F-150, which both debuted with modern hybrid powertrains, the Ranger takes a more traditional approach, for better or worse.
The new Ranger is available with one of three turbodiesel engines around the world: single-turbo and twin-turbo versions of Ford's 2.0-liter diesel I-4, as well as the 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 that was omitted from the F-150 in our market.
The only gas engine will be a 2.3-liter turbocharged I-4 with 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, possibly unchanged from the current Ranger.
The diesels are unlikely to arrive in the United States, which is fortunate given the previous-gen diesel F-150 disappointed us, and the turbocharged I-4 was the only bright light in the outgoing Ranger.
